It’s not just your face that reveals your true age—your clothes can make you look older, too, if you don’t choose them wisely. Clinton Kelly, fashion guru and host of the hit TLC show “What Not to Wear,” offers these tips on how to dress to look you best.

As it turns out, knowing what not to wear is just as important as nailing the right look. “I have three main tips for dressing once you’ve reached a certain age,” says Kelly. “Avoid tops that show too much cleavage—especially for daytime. Don’t wear any skirts or shorts higher than the top of your kneecap. And don’t wear any garment that reveals your navel.”
If you’re starting to notice a common theme here of avoiding revealing styles, you’re catching on quickly. “Any time you show too much skin, it immediately thrusts you into competition with 21-year-old women, and that’s a competition you can’t win,” says Kelly. “But if it’s any comfort, remember that their perfect bodies are only temporary too, just like everyone else’s.”
So now that you’ve ditched the micro-minis of yesteryear, how should you fill your closet? “It’s important for women of all ages to consider trends when getting dressed,” says Kelly. “Trends help us feel connected to modern society. When you just give up on looking current, that ages you.” He is quick to add, however, that it’s important to adopt trends wisely. “Always refer to the three rules above when deciding whether a trend is right for you. I also recommend that older women pair one trend with other classic pieces, like matching a trendy tiered blouse with classic trousers.”
Which spring styles does Kelly like for the no-longer-21 set? “Color is a trend you can do at any age, and blue is this season’s biggest,” he says. “Bold accessories are also important this season—like statement necklaces in chunky stones such as turquoise, which is making a comeback.” Kelly also likes Gypsy earrings (just don’t wear them with your giant necklace). And when it’s time to go glam, Kelly favors one-shoulder dresses and blouses—items he considers fun and, for the most part, tasteful.
Clinton Kelly will be appearing at Overlook Hospital Saturday, April 25, to discuss his seven steps to developing healthy self-esteem, including looking great at any age. Registration required at 866-886-7009.
